Conventional timber framing

AS 1684.2 provides a conventional residential timber-framing pathway for non-cyclonic areas, while AS 1684.3 covers the corresponding cyclonic pathway. They may suit familiar framed construction where the building and proposed arrangement fit the applicable scope.

Engineered timber

AS 1720.1 is used for project-specific structural timber design, including members and connections that are not resolved through a conventional framing pathway. It can work alongside AS 1684 where only part of a structure needs engineered timber design.

The loading basis establishes the actions the structure must resist. The relevant material standards are then used to design members, connections, bracing, tie-down, slabs and footings. The NCC, jurisdiction, confirmed classification, proprietary product requirements and project conditions can introduce other requirements, so this is a list of core references rather than an exhaustive design basis.
