What loads are considered when designing a Class 10 building?

Structural design checks the actions that may affect a building during its intended life and how they combine. For an ordinary Class 10 project, these commonly include the structure's own weight, use of the building, wind and site-dependent environmental actions.

The NCC and the loading framework

The National Construction Code establishes structural performance requirements and referenced design pathways. AS/NZS 1170.0 sets out the general structural design basis and how actions are considered together. The other parts address particular types of action. The applicable pathway still depends on the confirmed building classification, jurisdiction and project conditions.

Permanent and imposed actions

AS/NZS 1170.1 addresses permanent actions, such as the self-weight of framing, roofing, walls and fixed components, and imposed actions associated with the intended use and access. A garage, storage area, roof or other occupied or accessible surface may have different design considerations.

Wind actions

Wind may be determined through AS4055 for a suitable building within that Standard's scope and limits, or through the more general project-specific AS/NZS 1170.2 pathway. Wind affects the framing, bracing, cladding support, connections, tie-down and load path to the ground. A site wind classification is an input to design, not the completed structural design.

Snow, ice and earthquake actions

AS/NZS 1170.3 covers snow and ice actions where the project location makes them relevant. AS 1170.4 covers earthquake actions. Their significance depends on the site, building and structural arrangement; customers are not expected to determine this before submitting the project.

Ordinary use and unusual loads
